USS Wright (AV-1)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Wright_(AV-1)
|
USS Wright (AV-1)
USS Wright (AZ-1/AV-1) was a one-of-a-kind
auxiliary ship in the United
States Navy, named for aviation pioneer Orville
Wright.
World
War II, 1941
Wright departed Pearl Harbor on 20 November, bound for
Wake
Island, arrived at that advanced base on the 28th, and
landed Comdr. "Spiv" Winfield
S. Cunningham, who took command of the naval activities on
the vulnerable isle, Major James " Jimmy" Patrick
Sinnot Deveraux, USMC and Lt. Col Walter L.J. Bayler, USMC.
Other passengers who went ashore from the seaplane tender
included asphalt technicians, other construction workers, and
other Marine Corps officers. The ship also delivered 63,000
gallons of gasoline to Wake's storage tanks before setting
course for Midway. There, she delivered a cargo that included
ammunition and disembarked passengers that included men
reporting for duty at the NAS and with other Marine Corps ground
units. Then, with military and civilian passengers embarked, Wright
departed Midway on 4 December and headed for Pearl Harbor. While
en route, she received the electrifying news that the Japanese
had attacked Pearl Harbor on the morning of 7 December. Word of
the attack arrived shortly after 0800 that day, and Wright
cleared for action and manned her battle stations. Fortunately
for her, she never crossed the path of the Japanese striking
force. After reaching Pearl Harbor the day after the Japanese
attack, Wright got underway on 19 December to
transport 126 Marines of the 4th Defense Battalion, with their
gear, to Midway. She returned to Pearl Harbor on the day after
Christmas with 205 civilians embarked.
Wright then underwent voyage repairs, loaded stores
and cargo, embarked passengers, and set sail for the South Seas.
Departing Pearl Harbor on 2 April, Wright touched at Tutuila,
Samoa; the Fiji
Islands; Espiritu
Santo, in the New
Hebrides — where she debarked men of VP-72
— and Nouméa,
New
Caledonia, before she reached Sydney,
Australia, on 26 April. After visiting Melbourne
and Fremantle,
Wright headed for the Hawaiian Islands, retracing her
course, and reached Pearl Harbor on 16 June. For the next five
and one-half months, Wright shuttled military passengers,
arms, gasoline, and other equipment to Midway and other defense
bases of the Hawaiian
Sea Frontier. Leaving Oahu
on 1 December, Wright headed for the South Pacific
carrying, as passengers, the officers and men of Marine
Scout Bomber Squadron 233 (VMSB 233) and VMSB-234,
along with other passengers and logistic support cargo.

USS Wharton (AP-7)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Wharton_(AP-7)
|
USS Wharton (AP-7)
USS Wharton (AP-7) was a troop
transport and hospital
ship in the service of the United
States Navy during World
War II. Originally built for the Munson
Steamship Line as the cargo
liner SS Southern Cross in 1921, she was
acquired by the Navy as World War II approached and, once the
United States became a combatant, she served as a troop
transport and hospital ship in the Pacific
Theatre. At war's end, she returned Stateside proudly with three
battle
stars.
SS Southern Cross operated in the South American trade
from 1921 until acquired by the Navy from the Maritime
Commission on 8 November 1939. Two days later, the ship was
renamed Wharton and designated AP-7. She was converted to
a troop transport by the Todd
Shipbuilding Corp., in the Robbins Drydock in Erie Basin at Brooklyn,
New York. The transport was commissioned at the New
York Navy Yard on 7 December 1940, Capt. Ernest L.
Vanderkloot in command.
World
War II Pacific Theatre operations
Wharton departed Brooklyn
on 7 January 1941, bound for Guantanamo
Bay, Cuba, where she conducted shakedown
before proceeding on through the Panama
Canal to her home port, Mare
Island, California.
Assigned to the Naval
Transportation Service, Wharton transported service
personnel and their families, as well as cargo, on triangular
runs from San
Francisco, San
Diego, and Pearl
Harbor.
She also made one trip to Midway
Island.
Supporting
the Okinawa invasion
Wharton next participated in the operations against Okinawa,
arriving offshore on 19 May. The transport soon disembarked
2,118 troops (including 30 Army nurses)
in LCM's sent from shore, as Wharton ordinarily carried
no landing craft of her own.
Several times, the ship went to general
quarters and was screened by smoke, but she emerged from the
campaign unscathed by kamikazes
that had taken such a dreadful toll from American ships.
On 22 May, the transport departed for the Caroline
Islands, with 273 troops and 29 casualties embarked, and
arrived at Ulithi on the 28th.
Wharton took part in no further combat operations and
returned home — via Seeadler Harbor, Guadalcanal, Espiritu
Santo, Nouméa, and Suva — to San Francisco on 25 June.
The ship remained there until 3 August, when she moved to
Seattle, Washington, before returning to Pearl Harbor.
End-of-War
activities
Hostilities had then ended, but the gigantic job of returning
troops from the far-flung bases and islands nonetheless
remained.
Wharton conducted three voyages to the western Pacific
— calling at Eniwetok, Guam, Saipan, Samar, Tacloban,
and Puerto
Princessa through the end of 1945 to pick up Army, Navy, and
Marine Corps veterans and return them to the United States in
"Operation
Magic Carpet".
Wharton made one more trip under "Magic Carpet" to
Yokosuka, Japan, in February 1946.
