This past Memorial weekend the Carpathia Club hosted the 35th
Annual Donauschwaben Tournament. Planning for the tournament started in
mid December. The club wanted to make sure that everything was in place
so that everyone would have a good time. A week before the Tournament it
did not look like we were going to be able to play any games on our
field, as the field was under water due to all the rain we had in May.
It was one of the most severe floods that we have ever had. We were
pumping water off the field for a solid week. Some people were there ten
to twelve hours a day getting the club and field ready. (Lucky for us
that some of members were laid off at the time, they have since returned
to work). By Friday, the field was ready to be played on.
This year’s tournament saw the return of our good friends LA
Danubia. It is always good to see them on the field, as well as off the
field. We seem to pack two weeks worth of fun into 3 days and this year
was no exception.
This year's tournament had the Kickers enter 5 teams. The 1st
team opened play against Milwaukee, beating them by 2-0. That afternoon
they went up against Philadelphia Danubia beating them by the same 2-0
score. The 1st team started Sunday with a tie against Chicago Green
/White. The 2nd game saw them get their offense back on track
against a young Windsor team beating them by 3-0. With a record of 3-0-1
it was good enough to put them thru to the final. The final game saw
them pitted against our old nemesis Cleveland Concordia. The Kickers had
a couple of early chances but saw both shots from close range sail over
the net. The second half was a chess match between the two teams. Late
in the 2nd half Cleveland broke the deadlock on a miscue by a Kickers
defender. Cleveland went on the defensive and held onto the lead for a
1-0 win and their 6th Donauschwaben Championship.
The Reserve Team played Cleveland in their 1st game losing 3-0,
in their 2nd game they lost to Akron by the score of 2-0. Sunday the
|Reserve Team fared a bit better beating Windsor 2-1, before losing to
Chicago 2-1. Their tournament was over with a 1-3 record.
The Women’s Open Division saw the Carpathia Women’s team do
very well in this year’s tournament. They finished with a 3-1 record
with their only loss coming at the hands of eventual champions, Mansfield
Liederkranz . The 3 wins were good enough to give them a 2nd place
finish. This year the Kickers entered two 0-35 teams in the tournament.
The O-35-A won the championship finishing the tournament
undefeated with record of 4-0. The O -35 B also went undefeated
finishing with a 3-0-1 capturing the 2nd place trophy.
I would like to congratulate all of our teams for an excellent
showing at this year’s tournament on and off the field. I would also
like to thank all of the committee members for the seven months of hard
work it was greatly appreciated. I would also like to thank all of the
volunteers that helped during the weekend we could not have done it
without you.
