Thriller!
|

The Sport Club U14 Girls Maroon team won a
thrilling championship over the labor day
weekend in Palatine IL. After
winning the semifinal on Sunday night that
was delayed twice by thunder and lightning
and then moved to a lighted field because
of darkness the U14 Girls under the
guidance of Nicole Schmidt proved too much
for lake Country United-(another Wisconsin
team) in the finals on Monday.
A suspense-filled second half included
several near misses by MSC for scores.
With the game tied 1-1 and time running
out MSC scored with 53 seconds left in the
match. Congratulations MSC U14

CARPATHIA
KICKERS
MEN’S 1ST TEAM
USASA
NATIONAL CUP FINALIST
Forwarded by Carpathia
Donauschwaben

by
George
Schleis and Chris Pesta
|
The Carpathia Men’s First Team, under the direction
of Coaches Mike Talan, John Huth, and Manager Mike Dolan,
arrived in Philadelphia to compete in the United States Adult
Soccer Association (USASA) National Cup Men’s Amateur Finals
which took place on July 30 through August 1 at the United
German Hungarian’s Club (UGH) facility. UGH is one of the
two Donauschwaben Club’s in Philadelphia. The Kicker’s,
winners of the Midwest Region, were one of four teams to
compete in this National Cup competition, one of the oldest
soccer tournaments in the United States. The Kicker’s won
this tournament in 1962 and lost in the finals in 1965.
Their first game was on July 30 against the
Barracuda’s FC out of Texas. This game was quite historic
for the Kickers…they have not been in this position for
almost four decades. As the game kicked off it was easy to see
the Kicker’s were playing a home like game with many, many,
fans for the local Donauschwaben Club coming out to support
the team on. The Kicker’s showed no mercy as they easily
handled the Barracuda’s with 5-0 score. This victory ensured
the Kickers would play on Sunday in the cup finals against a
strong Boston Olympiakos (MA) team.
Carpathia Nation was buzzing as phone calls and text
messages were shared amongst the faithful fans that traveled
with the team to Philadelphia and for those who were home.
Some were checking into car pooling to Philadelphia, while
others checking into airfare. In the end, a few members made
the 11 hour trip to Philadelphia to support the Kicker’s
team. Sunday, August 1st, Kicker fans started to arrive in the
Carpathia Club Member’s bar hoping to watch the game.
Unfortunately, there was no video coverage of this game, and
the faithful patrons had to rely on the cell phone calls from
our friends who were at the game. The start of the game was
delayed for nearly 2 hours due to a rain delay as the other fi
nal games going into overtime and shoot outs. During the
delay, a group of “Old Timers” (Adolph Hammer, Peter Wild,
Arthur Mueller, Werner Bock, and Helmut Egger) shared many
stories from their past. When Peter Wild heard about the rain
delay, he shook his head and said “I hoped they brought
their long cleats”!
The game finally started at 3:45 PM at that same time
it started to rain like in a monsoon. Boston came out strong,
scoring a quick goal in the opening minutes. The Kickers came
back to tie the game a short time later as Ryan Rzepka
whistled a left footer shot past the goal keeper. Boston
scored again just before half time on a corner kick. The
Kickers came out at half time and slowly started to enforce
their will on Boston. By half way through the 2nd half, the
Kickers were controlling 80% of the game as Boston held on.
With 6 minutes left the Kicker’s tied the game on another
goal by Ryan. The bench and stands immediately erupted. The
Member’s Bar was so loud, I’m sure the fans in
Philadelphia heard them. From the restart of the goal the
Kicker’s were in complete control of the game and were just
off the mark with several opportunities. As the game neared
the end of the 2nd half Boston broke out on a 2 on one play
against the Kicker’s as one of the Kicker’s defenders
slipped on the slick turf. Boston’s striker hammered a shot
at the Kicker’s goal, the Kicker’s goalie Billy Melenounk
made a diving attempt and just touched the ball to his right.
The ball hit the far right post, spun outside the net, and
then barely rolled across the line. A collective sigh could be
heard all the way from the Carpathia … a valiant, determined
effort … dashed in the last moments of the match. The Team
and fans at the game were devastated.
Carpathia fans showed their support by making banners
that hung out at the entrance of the Carpathia Club for the
players to see. Even some supporters came out at 5:30 AM to
greet the players as the bus arrived home.
Only a Kickers player can understand the magnitude of
having come this far, worked so hard, dreamt of what could
have been and can still dream of what WILL BE next time they
get this far! The excitement that this team generated at the
club … will not be soon forgotten. They reminded us all what
it means to wear a Kickers Uniform and to be proud … really
proud to have represented such a great soccer organization.
This team has meant a lot to all the past and current
Kicker’s players. 9 year old Kicker defender Evan Schleis’
message on the banner said it all, “I want to be just like
you guys!”

30 TEAM - AUGUST RECAP
|
On August 14, 2010, the GWO30 Team
opened the 2010-2011 Metro League season
against Lions under hot and muggy
conditions. It also did not help that field
was uncut and unlined for the match, forcing
several early arrivals into field
maintenance rolls. And for the trifecta, GW
was thin for the match due to late scratches
from Rob
Czop (injury)
and Les
Rebbeck
(virus). Still, GW started the match well
and held a lot of the possession with some
nice passing combinations and movement. The
best GW opportunity of the first half came
with John
Parsinen held
in position in the penalty area as he
received a looping pass into the box. As the
service arrived, Parsinen
was
knocked off ball seeing it fall to Derrick
Wilkinson who
had broken in from the wing. Wilkinson
was
unfortunate to have his shot carry wide of
the goal. The GW back line of Pat
Palbicke,
Parsinen,
Chris
Wixson,
and John
Sedej was
solid and able to thwart most of the
advances from the Lions. The game remained
deadlocked at the half; but GW lost their
lone substitute when John
Sedej had
to leave early for a young republicans
meeting.
The second half was one of
frustration for the home side. Lions scored
first on a suspected off sides play. Later, Gabby
Sepiashvili came
up big on a free kick from 22 yard out,
parrying the strong shot away to keep the
Lions from extending their lead. As the legs
began to tire, GW was caught out of position
and the Lions held possession along the top
of the 18 yard box long enough to set up a
good shot. Gabby
got
a hand on the ball, but not enough to keep
it out of the net. Down 2-0, GW worked to
cut the deficit and were finally rewarded
when Chris
Mortonson played
into Keith
Andersson inside
the Lions penalty area. Patiently, Andersson
dropped
the ball back to a supporting Scott
Walz who
took a couple touches, drawing in the Lions
defense before playing square to Greg
Boltz who
fired a line drive into the upper corner of
the net. Although the goal gave the squad a
bit of a lift, GW was unable to score again
and the game ended 2-1 to the Lions. (Reported
by Greg Boltz).

OVER
40 TEAM - AUGUST RECAP
|
The Green White Over 40 Team opened
the 2010-2011 season in smashing fashion
against Olympics on August 18th. GW lit the
lamp just five minutes into the match when Chris
Wellman
picked out David
Nichols up
top. With time to take a touch, Nichols
slotted
the keeper for the 1-0 lead. But Olympics
struck back on the 25 minute mark off a well
taken free kick. The match remained tied
through the half. Following the
intermission, Wellman
got
caught in possession in the back and saw the
resulting break away put Olympics up 2-1.
But GW was determined not to go down against
one of last season’s cellar dwellers and
picked up the tempo to ultimately find the
equalizer off a Joel
Meadow punt,
of all things. The clearance sailed high and
long; took a big bounce over the defense,
and allowed Greg
Healy to
run on to it, round the keeper and tap in to
knot the score. In the closing minutes, GW
were unlucky not to collect all three points
when John
Dunkas was
denied by the cross-bar off a Jusef
Muratovic cross.

YOUTH TEAMS - FALL PREVIEW

The U09 Cosmos participated in the
Buffalo Grove Classic on August 28th and
29th. They took on two tough teams on
Saturday, emerging without a win. But on
Sunday, in the hot and humid conditions,
they turned up some heat of their own and
scored a total of 19 goals to claim 3rd
place in the Black Division. The squad is
ready and anxious to start the season. (Reported

|
The Green White Gators placed 2nd in
the 2010 Buffalo Grove Kick-Off Classic (U10
Boys, Black Division) August 28-29 with one
win, two ties, and one loss. Collectively
they scored 9-8 with two ties against the
1st place team, LASC Predators Gold (3-3,
2-2), a 3-1 win over Team Evanston White,
and a 1- 2 loss in the final afternoon game
against Spartan FC United. Rodolfo
Rodriguez
led
the scoring with 6 goals and 2 assists. Colin
Sand,
Eliseo
Palacios,
and Mason
Robbins all
added goals of their own. In goal were Matthew
Hamilton,
Ethan
Mundt,
and Bobby
Theodosiadis.
The defense and midfield were anchored with Fabian
Halblander,
Adrian
Rupar,
and Davis
Parks.
This recently-formed team with many players
new to Green White showed tremendous poise
as they worked to learn a new formation and
new positions while relying on new
teammates. Congratulations, Gators, on a job
well done! (Reported by Jerry

Coach
Kyle Perkins, Trainer Simone Lodge
|
The new U09 Green White Emeralds
stated the season off by winning their
division at the Buffalo Grove tournament the
weekend of Aug 28 and 29th. The Emeralds
have 7 players who are new to travel soccer
including a 6 year old and two 7 year old
players. You would not know by the way they
played. They rolled through their division
winning all 4 games giving up only 2 goals
for the tournament. They scored 21 goals
giving up only those two. What was most
impressive was their passing and talking on
the field. They have come up with a way to
call for a pass that is unique. If you get a
chance to see the Emeralds play, pay
attention to the talk on the field when they
are calling for a pass. You will be in for a
laugh and you may be treated to the
“worm” by one of the Emeralds after a
goal. (Reported by Kyle Perkins).

|
The Green and White Knights put in a
solid performance in all 4 games played at
the Buffalo Grove Kick-Off Classic. Their
first match against current league rivals
Spartan FC Premier was a hard fought
defensive game with the Knights getting a
well deserved goal while holding a clean
sheet resulting in a 1-0 win. The second
game was an equally close match with the
Chicago Kickers that ended in a 3-2 victory
for the Knights. The second day started with
a tough match against the Park Ridge
Firepower. Although the Knights held on to a
1-1 tie at halftime, Park Ridge was able to
put two more in the net for a 1-3 loss for
the Knights. After earning a 3-2 victory in
the last game against Arlington Aces White
Lightning, the Knights finished the
tournament in 2nd place with a 3-1 record.
Playing for the Knights were Ashley

White Panthers (GU10)
Coaches
Mike Folkers, Doug Galloway, Trainer
David
Gibson
|
The Panthers started off the year
right at the Buffalo Grove Soccer
Tournament. Although their first game had an
8am kick off it did not seem to phase the
girls very much. The girls seemed to find
their groove early and ended the game 9-3.
During the second game the girls showed
great defense and kept up the same offense
to win 8- 0; However the next day posed two
great chaleventulenges. The first challenge
was for the D league Panthers to face a C
league team. This game was the second 8am
kick off in the tournament and seemed to
cause a bit of tiredness in the opening
half. As the game went on the girls did
everything asked of them.
Although looking like the better team
and having many chances, the ball was just
not finding the net as they did the day
before and ended the game in a 2-0 loss. As
the other games in their division came to a
close it was evident that the Panthers were
in 3rd place by 1 point, and 2nd place
currently belonged to their afternoon
opponent, meaning a win would grant them a 2nd
place finish. The opponent was a very
physical team and the Panthers responded
well and kept their composure and fought for
every loose ball. The game was tied 1-1 with
the minutes winding down, the Panthers found
the net on a loose ball in front of the
goal, and ended the game 2-1 and a 2nd place
finish. Great ending to a great weekend. (Reported
by Mike Folkers).

White Tornados (GU11)
Coaches
Glen Wiley, Mike Haaning, Trainer Chris
Pearson
|
A very promising start to the year
for the Tornadoes at the BG tournament. The
team opened up with a solid victory in game
1 holding their opponent scoreless while
winning 2-0. The team competed hard in game
two against a talented Evanston team playing
their first game of the tournament. While
getting down early 3 -0 the tornadoes
settled down and played a more competitive
second half. They continued to battle but
eventually lost 5-2. Day two brought another
8 am start against the Arlington Aces. While
coming out a little slow the Tornadoes woke
up and played a very competitive game that
ended in a well played 2-2 tie. The game saw
some great goalkeeping on each side. It was
a riveting finish that saw the Tornadoes
place several shots on goal in the closing
minute. While starting slow in game 4, it
was full scale assault for the Tornadoes
once the game faces were on. They battled
back to a 2-2 tie at the half and dominated
second half play for a 7-2 victory. The
Tornadoes earned a third place finish in the
BG tournament. Goal scoring was well
balanced across the games with 6 different
team members scoring. Passing, positioning
and defense improved as the games
progressed. Many positives for this new
talented group of U11 girls. The Tornadoes
are excited for league play to begin! (Reported

White Wolves (GU13)

|
This team is coached by LaCost
and
Kolling
and
trained by Luke
Jones.
This team had a successful season last
spring and moved to the "big
field" in the fall. Adding 5 new
seasoned girls from both Aces and Sockers.
In preparation for the Elgin Back To
School Classic, the girls had 5 days of
training before the tournament. After
digging a hole in the first game against Oak
Forest 3-0, the spunky Wolves girls came
back with 2 goals to end the game 3-2. In
the second game against Synergy, the Wolves
lost 2-1 after dominating the entire game.
The two goals were break-a-ways after
keeping the ball on the opponents side a
majority of the time. This is one of those
that the Wolves should have won, but the
girls and coaches learned more things about
themselves in the end. The girls got their
legs under them by the third game and won
easily 2-0. They played NIFC which they will
play during the season. A good start for the
Wolves. (Reported by Greg LaCost).

White Wildcats (GU15)
Coach
Eric Eakin, Trainer Brandon McLemore
|
The U15 Wildcats kicked off the
season with a hard earned 2nd place finish
in the Kicker’s United Back to School
Classic Tournament in Elgin. Surviving
injury and illness, they played without subs
in two games and even played shorthanded for
part of one. All the while, the Wildcats
scored an impressive 15 goals over the four
games spreading the scoring among 6 players.
With no substitutes on the bench the
Wildcats opened the fall season and
tournament giving up two goals while playing
shorthanded but managed to come back with
2nd half goals (Carlson,
Reese)
to tie TCSA Cyclones 2- 2. With the arrival
of 3 additional Wildcat players for the
second game of the day, the Cheeky Girls
from Yorkville proved no match for the
Wildcats who controlled the game end to end
and netted a 4-1 victory.
Offense continued to power the
Wildcats with 4 different scorers (Niklewicz,
Dieterich, K. Welk,
Reese)
against the Cheeky Girls. The offensive show
continued Sunday morning as Wildcats took
the opening kickoff, and after three passes,
the ball found the at the back of the net.
By halftime it was 4-0 and ended in a 7-0
rout of the West Chicago United. Once again
scoring was spread around (K.
Welk, Reese, Niklewicz,
Dieterich,
Krawczyk)
and ended with a well placed corner kick
that glanced off of a United player for an
own goal. Throughout pool play, the defense
(Okon,
Cortesi, M. Welk, Eakin, Makris,
Rickett)
shut down the opponents and tallied their
first shut out of the season. Goalie play
was stellar (Carlson,
Brask)
giving up only one goal over three games
when playing full strength. A special note
goes to our U13 guest stand-in goalie (Rickett)
who adapted nicely to the full sized goal in
our opening game. With two players lost to
illness and a broken hand, the Wildcats
advanced to the finals to take on the
Marauders from Kalamazoo, Michigan. With one
sub on the bench, the Wildcats jumped to an
early 1- 0 lead with a quick score (Reese).
The aptly named Marauders utilized foul
filled physical play and five extra players
on the bench to wear down the Wildcats that
netted the Marauders more yellow cards than
goals. After giving up three goals, the
Wildcats bounced back with a goal (K.
Welk)
to bring score to 3-2. The Marauders tallied
a fine score at the end of the game for a
4-2 win. (Reported by Eric
Eakin).

Coaches

Trainer

|
After having some training sessions
with Coach LaCost
and
Coach Konar,
the girls chose their name for the season:
"Mean Green Fighting Machine." The
girls are from 6 different high schools and
have really come together. Their trainer, Luke
Jones,
who played semi-pro ball in England, came
back from summer holiday in England and
started working with the U16 Power and the
U17 MGFM team. With a week of training with
Luke, MGFM came in strong to the Elgin Back
to School Classic, taking 2nd place in the
end. In their first game of the tournament,
MGFM beat NIFC 3-1 and WC United 1-0. The
Defense initially lead by Maigler
and
Potratz
really
did a great job at slowing down the attacks
of our opponents. The mids worked tirelessly
and the forwards were fast and creative.
Goals were had by Burgraff,
Stepanovich,
and Cerniglia.
MGFM had a good first half against McHenry
in the finals until late in the first half a
McHenry girl upended defensive mid LaCost
for
both a yellow card for McHenry and a trip in
an ambulance for LaCost
for a back injury. LaCost
had
a strain contusion of the back and neck and
everyone is hoping for a quick recovery. The
second half was less productive for MGFM
with 2 goals against them, which ended the
game. Stellar play by our goalie, Gold,
(with multiple saves) kept the girls alive.
The PK save was simply fabulous. Great
showing for this new B level team. (Reported
by Greg LaCost).
