2010 Winter LA Donauschwäbische Verstorbene

Heidi was an enthusiastic and fun-loving member of several Danube Swabian groups, including the Dance Group, the Bowling League and the Trachtenchor.

One of the things that she loved best was wearing a new Dirndl or Tracht to an event.

On Kirchweih she said, "Take a picture of me in my new Dirndl!". Heidi passed away on Christmas Eve.

† Karen Elisabeth Smith †

Father Theodore's sister Karen passed away unexpectedly on, 28 December 2009, after a brief hospitalization. She died in the Lord in her 44th year of life on the Feast of the Holy Innocents after receiving the Last Rites of the Church. Please keep her and us in your prayers!

She is survived by her parents, Will Ted and Joan Smith, my brother Gregory and Father Theodore Smith.
Karen was born 3 May 1965 in Ventura, California. She graduated from Mission Viejo High School in 1985. Karen was never a good student, but she is remembered for her faithfulness. A faithful employee of the boutique where she worked for about 20 years -- a faithful daughter and sister -- a faithful friend to one and all. Karen was a faithful Catholic who never missed Sunday mass and last received Holy Communion on Christmas day.
Karen was admitted to the emergency room the afternoon of the 26th due to pain from a fall. When her blood test was taken, it revealed an almost negligible white count. She was in ICU for almost 2 days where her condition worsened despite the nurses' heroic care. She was eventually diagnosed with APL (Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia -- a rare, rapid and overwhelming form of the disease,) but it came too late.  Despite the staff's prolonged efforts, Karen's kind but exhausted heart did not respond as we all hoped and prayed. Monday morning with her entire family at her side, she heeded the loving summons of her dear Savior, in Whom we place all our hope, as did Karen. We who knew her count her among God's holy innocents. May she rest in peace!
