HIGH NOON

I always think of my father when I see this movie.

The lessons learned have been with me my entire life.

TCT

Do not forsake me O my darlin’
On this our wedding day.
Do not forsake me O my darlin’
Wait, wait along.

The noonday train will bring Frank Miller.
If I’m a man I must be brave
And I must face that deadly killer
Or lie a coward, a craven coward,
Or lie a coward in my grave.

O to be torn ‘twixt love and duty!
S’posin’ I lose my fair-haired beauty!
Look at that big hand move along
Nearin’ high noon.

He made a vow while in State’s Prison,
Vow’d it would be my life or his and
I’m not afraid of death, but O,
What will I do if you leave me?

Do not forsake me O my darlin’
You made that promise when we wed.
Do not forsake me O my darlin’
Although you’re grievin’, I can’t be leavin’
Until I shoot Frank Miller dead.

Wait along, wait along
Wait along
Wait along

Availability of Records:

Several factors must be considered before an individual can view a record. These include:

  1. Determination that the requested record actually exists (see 1973 Fire).

  2. Records that were damaged in the 1973 Fire may not be immediately available for review. All fire-related records
  3. must be examined by our Preservation staff and, when necessary, be treated to mitigate mold contamination or other damage.
  4. In some cases, the requested record may not be available for review due to the severity of damage. In these instances,
  5. where possible, photocopies will be provided to researchers.

  6. Extremely fragile or severely damaged records may require extensive and time consuming conservation treatment
  7. from our Preservation Staff before they can be handled and/or photocopied.

  8. Verification that the record is archival and accessible to the public (see Archival Records).

    • The general public is not allowed direct access to non-archival records. Limited information from these records
    • is made available (via postal mail or fax) to the public under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)
    • See Records Center Program for additional information.

    • Veterans, or their next-of-kin (NOK) , may request copies of information from non-archival records online, or via postal mail
    • or fax (see Access to non-archival OMPFs). Veterans, or their next-of-kin, who have a strong interest in viewing their own files
    • in person, rather than receiving document copies by mail, may request an appointment to view non-archival records
    • with the Federal Records Center Research Room .

  9. It may take considerable time to identify and locate the requested record. The efficiency of available finding aids varies.

The record reviews and preservation actions cited above could take several weeks (or months) to complete based upon various factors.

Scheduling Research Room appointments in advance of visits is imperative.

Copy Fees:

The NARA fee schedule authorizes the Agency to collect fees from the public for copies of archived records (44 USC 2116c and 44 USC 2307).

There is no fee to request and review an archival record in the Archival Research Room. So too, any number of pages may be copied

for a per page fee.

  • Paper to paper copy made by Attendant: $ .80 per page and $3.50 per microform to paper copy

  • Self-service copies are $ .25 per paper to paper copy and $ .60 per microform to paper copy

The Research Room Attendant will determine if the condition of the requested record allows for self-service copying.

Payment by Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express Card is preferred, though cash or personal check is accepted.

Photocopy fees must be paid at the end of each day's research.

20953 W. Hoff Road
Elwood, IL 60421

On Oct. 3, 1999, Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery was dedicated as the 117th national cemetery

within the Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration.  When fully developed,

this 982-acre cemetery will provide 400,000 burial spaces.

Military Funeral Honors

On Aug. 26, 2003 the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery inaugurated an all-volunteer Memorial Squad

to assist in military honors. When possible, the melodic sound of live Taps can be heard echoing

throughout the serene cemetery grounds, otherwise, electronic Taps are available at three committal shelters.

The DOD program, "Honoring Those Who Served," calls for funeral directors to request military funeral honors

on behalf of the veteran's family. When requested, a detail consisting of at least two uniformed military persons,

with at least one being a member of the veteran's branch of service provide folding and presentation of the U.S. flag

and can also play Taps, either by a high-quality recording or a bugler.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

The Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery lies in the northwestern area of the former Joliet Army

Ammunition Plant, approximately 50 miles south of Chicago. Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery

is named after the 16th President of the United States and founder of the National Cemeteries. In the

midst of the Civil War, on July 17, 1862 President Lincoln's signature enacted the law authorizing the

establishment of national cemeteries "... for the soldiers who die in the service of the country."

During the Civil War there were 14 national cemeteries opened pursuant of this legislation.

President Lincoln's legacy is especially important to the people of Illinois, where he worked and lived.

Lincoln is remembered for his successful law practice and elected service as a resident of Illinois.

He served as an Illinois State Assemblyman and an Illinois Representative during the 13th Congress,

prior to his election as 16th President of the United States. He is buried in the Oak Ridge Cemetery

near the State Capital in Springfield, Illinois, where many additional sites of historical interest are located.

Congressman George E. Sangmeister, a veteran of the Korean War, served as a representative and

senator in the state of Illinois, 1973-87, and a U.S. Representative from Illinois, 1988-95. He was

instrumental in the acquisition of 982 acres from the former Joliet Arsenal and its redevelopment as

Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.

Monument and Memorials

Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery has a memorial walk that commemorates soldiers of 20th century

wars on 11 memorials.

An 18-foot granite obelisk crowned by a bronze eagle with outstretched wings commemorates the 2,403

Americans who died in the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. It was donated by the

Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and dedicated May 12, 2001.

The Blue Star Memorial Marker was donated by the District VIII Garden Club of Illinois and dedicated

on September 15, 2000. The marker is a tribute to American men and women who have served, are serving,

or will serve their country. Its symbolism dates to World War II when families of servicemen and women

displayed a square flag decorated with a blue star in their windows to signify that a loved one was in the armed forces.

Veterans Serving Our Community

Bolingbrook Veterans Honor Guard

The Bolingbrook Veterans Honor Guard is an independent association of Bolingbrook area Veterans who have gathered together to provide a brief, but very dignified, service of remembrance and recognition for fellow Bolingbrook area veterans at the time of their death. The service is usually provided at the Funeral Home used by the Veteran's family, although a grave side service can also be arranged.

The service of remembrance and recognition provided by the Honor             Guard consists of the following elements:

  • Honor Guard members present themselves before the casket of the fallen comrade, in a military and dignified manner.

  • Members then lay small symbolic tokens of remembrance - white              flower, U.S. Flag, and a sprig of evergreen at the casket of the deceased veteran. An explanation of the symbolism accompanies the presentation.
  • A prayer for the veteran and the veteran's family is offered.
  • The family is presented the Flag of Our Country, on behalf of a grateful nation.
  • A rifle volley is then fired, and Taps is played.
  • The ceremony concludes with each Honor Guard member (and any other veteran present who chooses to participate) presenting himself before his departed comrade and offering a final slow salute. This is accomplished while 'Amazing Grace' played by bagpipes is presented in the background.

The Bolingbrook Veterans Honor Guard is not a function of American Legion Post 1288 or V.F.W. Post 5917, although members of both organizations, as well as non-affiliated veterans, participate in the Honor Guard.  If you have a need for the services of the Honor Guard for a family member, please contact the Post or the Funeral Home Director.

If you are interested in serving with the Bolingbrook Veterans Honor Guard, please contact the Guard via Post 1288. The Guard attempts to maintain a relatively large listing of veterans who may be contacted to participate in a service, in order to insure that a full contingent can be secured for these short notice events.

The Honor Guard and its ceremony were developed by two long time prior residents and active Bolingbrook veterans: Jim Yocum and John Beckwith, Sr.
