Dear
Landsleute and Friends of the Donauschwäbische Stiftung,
No matter what city you drive through, Mansfield, St. Louis,
or LA there are many
billboards
that advertise the latest cars, appliances or electronics. The
billboards
themselves
have evolved to large high-tech screens sporting brilliant
color and ever
changing
ads. When traveling with my Opa, passing these signs, er
sagt immer,
“Warum
muss ich das han. Was ich han shaft noch immer.” I
explain that he is
very
right, but also that “what’s new” is here to make the
lives of the next generation a
bit
easier.
As I reflect on this discussion with Opa, I consider the
Schwaben youth of today.
Our
teens text, Facebook, Twitter and Skype on a variety of
electronic devices. They
are
in constant contact with each other no matter what the city or
continent. The
youth
are creating immediate Schwaben traditions after each event
they attend
together.
They create and share Schwaben history at record speed. Their
interest in
our
past history is evident when you witness their attention to
the guest speakers and
historians
at events such as the annual Jugendlager, Labor Day trips and
travels
overseas
or when you see them win a soccer trophy their Opa once
coveted.
Our Kleinekinder are quickly growing up. In 10 – 12 years
they will be our Youth
Groups.
Just imagine what billboard ads or “new stuff” will
influence their lives ! What
we
have as Schwaben people will always work. The challenge will
be to keep up with the
speed
of the Jugend and recognize their on-going history and
traditions.
With your support, the Stiftung pledges to maintain the legacy
of how we arrived
at
where we are today and lay witness, assist and guide our youth
to a flourishing
future.
Watch
for the ads, “Do you Stiftung?”
