Liebe
Donauschwaben, Dear Friends,
The Donauschwaben Christmases of yesteryear were spiritual, with humble gifts
for the children, yet filled with gratitude for the gift of life, family, and
friends. Simply, The words of Friedrich Rückert (1788-1866) describe the sentiments in:
“Remembrance is the only paradise from which we cannot be expelled.”
Christmases of war, expulsion, refugee-and-death camps were extremely brutal, harsh, and inhumane. Survival was questionable, feelings numb. Unwanted, often hunted, hopeless. Simply described with the words of Katharina Nysten (1963): “There was Christmas without gifts. There was no hope, no candy. There was no feeling for a thanks. There was not even holy. There was no gladness for old Yule. There was no home, just worthless money. There was not even a glistening star. There was no face of merry.” Faith in God, his gifts to us, i.e. hope, endurance, the will to survive, and to work hard, picked us up again and brought us to new shores, a new Heimat, new hope. Christmases of the new homelands brought us freedom, opportunities and success. The generations born here enjoy a world of riches. The stories they hear from their families and friends, the “Erlebnisgeneration- Survival Generation”, seem so unreal, so unbearable. “How could you stand it and survive those times?” Have you every wondered why you have been given so much by your parents, Omas and Opas? They cuddle you with love, try to keep you from any wants and harm. You are their treasures, as well as your own, treat yourself accordingly. “New Generations of Donauschwaben”, please , value the gifts you have received from your ancestors- their values, their faith, their endurance and their love of their culture. Many of you do, but please don’t give up because it might not be considered to be “IN”. Your inheritance is a wealth, treat it with respect, character and honor. Be thankful for your heritage. Take the mandate give to you, and continue to uphold it. BE PROUD TO BE A SCHWOB! Leo Mayer President

A “Schwenglische” Christmas Thought
Many Jahre ago, there were zwei alte Omas sitting im nass kaltes Wetter. They
were giving their old horse a chance to rest beside their wagon. They were on
the way back von Dorf, mit dem wagon filled with Geshenke needed to finish the
Weihnachtszeit festivities. Upon returning to their travels, der alte Gaul is
grum geht in its back left foot. The Omas were quite worried about finishing the
trip Daheim since it was getting Dunkel. When they came to a fork in the road,
one Oma wanted to take the kurzer Weg to the left although the road was filled
with Schollen und Löcher. Her friend wanted to take the longer, straighter,
well-traveled path to the right. After a kleiner Streid, they agreed to travel
along the road to the right. Much to their pleasure they received needed Hilfe
along the way and were safely Daheim before der Dunkelheit. They had much joy
with their families that evening and wished each other a, “Frohe Weihnachten!”
Moral of the story: Bleib echt, langsam und gerade. Remember to take this
Christmas holiday and New Year slow and steady. Stay true to your family and
friends. Hug an Oma!! No matter the difficulties of the day, trust in the Wurzel
(roots) und traditions of our heritage to guide you down the “right” path. Wishing you and your familyA frohe WeihnachtenAnd a Happy New YearEddie TulliusStiftungspräsident

Word of God The following scripture verses are taken from Matthew, Chapter 7, beginning with verse ... 12. Do for others what you would like them to do for you. This is a summary of all that is taught in the law and the prophets. 13. You can enter God's Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose the easy way. 14. But the gateway to life is small and the road is narrow, and only a few ever find it.
