Titus County, TX - Cemeteries: Keith Cemetery # 3
The Keith family was very prevalent in the development of the area around the
Town of Cookville. Three of the Titus County Cemeteries bear their name and
several Keiths are buried in the Cookville cemetery.

This cemetery will be called Keith #3 as it was the most recent of the three.
It lies on a hilltop a short distance West of the business section of Cookville.
It is a deeded acre of land set aside as a family burial place. At this writing
it is sparely used and therefore will last some time into the future.
It is well maintained with a locked gate restricting automobile access to it.

To reach the Keith #3 Cemetery from the Titus County courthouse, take Jefferson Avenue (US 271) North for 0.9 miles to the intersection with US 67 (16th Street) Turn right (East) on US 67 and proceed 7.1 miles to the intersection of FM 1000. Turn right (South) onto FM 1000 and continue for 0.2 mile to the intersection of County Road (CR) 4054 (CR SE 17) which parallels the railroad tracks. Turn right onto CR 4054 and proceed 0.4 mile to the intersection of an unnamed black topped road that intersects from the right. Turn right onto that road. The gate to the cemetery lies about 0.1 mile at the end of that road. The cemetery can be found at the crest of the hill. Coordinates: 33o10.976N 094o51.594W

KEITH, HARGISS CEMETERY

Keith, Hargiss Cemetery is one of several in Titus County that must, at this
time, be considered lost. Since no monuments existed in the cemetery, no
effort was expended to locate it exactly. Lynch Harper writes in his “Titus
County Cemeteries” that: “This cemetery is located some 14.5 miles North of
Mt. Pleasant on the E. C. Beasley Headright Survey” and is on the North side
of a county road that use to be the road from Talco to Wilkerson.

It is an old cemetery and was named Hargiss by some because members of the Hargiss family were buried there. No sign of any kind remains to indicate the grave locations.

“Excerpts from J. H. King Memories
Year 1847 - just before Christmas we moved 3 miles West and 35 degrees North, to the Horse Creek Neighborhood (Community) of Titus County, Texas. (The area somewhat North of present day Cookville Texas). We had a school and a church, there were 11 other families, some were even as close as a half-mile; others much further North. They were J. B. Keith, D. Young, Warren Cash Keith, William Keith and wife (they parents of the other Keiths), Jo Keith, J. H.Keith, William Tigert, William Heath, William Taylor, Jas Spencer, John Rogers and his wife.”

I could not find where the Hardin girls went; William H Keith's half sisters nor Lucy and Birdie Keith.
