Joshua Dawson Stewart

The 1840 census shows Joshua D. Stewart to be 38 years old, living in Missouri
Township, Clark County, Arkansas. His was a farmer. He owned 3 slaves at that time.

He was one of the founders of Rome, Arkansas (no longer exists). The site of Rome is
about 1 1/2 miles north of the I-30 exit for Okalona (about 6 miles south of Okalona)
on Arkansas state highway 51. The "Old Rome" cemetery is now the only landmark.

Joshua D. Stewart served as a judge from 1840 to 1842, and as a member of the
Arkansas House of Representatives in 1842-1843. Joshua had a store in Rome and
was appointed Postmaster in 1851. (Ref: publication: Clark County Arkansas: Past and

Arkansas.)

Clark County, Arkansas. He was a merchant, with a real estate value of $2000. His
wife, Mary Thornton, age 38, was born in Union County, Illinois. They had 7 children,
all born in Arkansas: William G., age 20; Noah Webster, 17; Fountain Brown, 15;
Joshua D., 13; Victoria A., 9; Mary W., 2; and Martha P. He owned 6 slaves.

The 1860 census lists Joshua as a 58-year-old farmer in Elkins Township, Clark
County, Arkansas. His real estate was valued at $7680 and his personal estate at
$19,861. He owned 16 slaves. The children, Joshua D., Mary W., Martha P., and
Hannibal were still living at home. William G., Noah Webster, and Fountain B. were on
their own. Victoria had married James Berry Gray in 1858.
In 1870 Joshua was still a farmer in Elkins Township. His real estate was worth $2000
and his personal estate $100. Hannibal, age 17, was still at home.

Joshua died on August 27, 1879, in Clark County, Arkansas

Gray was born on December 19, 1830. Accord ing to family oral history, the "B" stands for Berry, which was his mother's ma iden name. He had a twin brother, Jeff. They were born in Kentucky. The 1840 U.S. Census shows two male children, age 5-10, listed under Nathaniel Gray, Sa lem District, Livingston County, Kentucky. The 1850 Census lists Nathaniel G ray, along with twin sons, James B. and J.C., age 19. It shows that both young men were born in Kentucky. In 1850, the family lived in Missouri Township, Pike County, Arkansas. James B. Gray was appointed Postmaster, Huddleston, Pike County, Arkansas, on November 18, 1852 (Record of Appointment of Postmasters, v ol. 14, 1842-1858, page 68), and again on April 22, 1861, vol. 25B, 1857-1875, page 69 (courtesy David Kelley). He married Victoria A. Stewart on May 16, 1 858, in Clark County, Arkansas (Clark County Computerized Marriage Records, Boo k D1, page 0060 & family Bible). The 1860 census for Pike County, Arkansas, lists J. B. Gray, clerk, age 29, along with V. A., age 17, and N. P., female, a ge 2/12. On October 10, 1861, James B. Gray enlisted in Antoine, Pike County , Arkansas, as a private in Captain Speer's Company (Company A), 19th Arkansas (Dawson's) Infantry Regiment, Confederate States of America (Confederate Milita ry Records, National Archives, Washington, D.C.). He was honorably discharged o n account of disability (Phlhisis Pulmonalis - a form of pulmonary tuburculosis ) as diagnosed by the Regimental Surgeon, on the order of Colonel C.L. Dawson, Regimental Commander, in July, 1862. This diagnosis was probably wrong because James Berry Gray lived until 1899. It was also fortunate for him, given the fat e of the 19th (Dawson's) Arkansas Infantry Regiment during the War Between the States. The handwritten discharge record is in the possession of his descend ants along with a pardon, signed by President Andrew Johnson on November 9, 186 5. The part of the discharge record written by William B. Speer, Capt., Company A, 19th Arkansas Infantry Regiment describes James Berry Gray as being 6 feet "high," of light complexion, and having blue eyes. It is interesting to note that James Berry Gray's oath of amnesty was recorded in the County of Hempstea d, Arkansas, and was accepted by a William G. Stewart. Although we don't have d ocumentation that Stewart was James' brother-in-law, Mary Jane Gray (James' sis ter) married a William G. Stewart, brother of Victoria A. Stewart Gray, on 8 Se ptember 1853 Spouse: Victoria A STEWART.
