As always, the fall has been an extremely busy time for the Jugendgruppe.
After the “Tag der Donauschwaben USA und Canada”
in Philadelphia, the youth group has been working hard
and performing often.
In August, we performed at the Heimatfest in Lake Villa and when Labor Day came around... we were found with nothing to do. We
all found pleasure in relaxing over the long weekend because we were all aware of what was to come.
Over the weekend of September 10th, the youth group
worked
hard running the small bar at the German Day Weekend
in Lincoln Square. Not only did we bartend Friday, Saturday
and Sunday, but we also participated in the annual Steuben
Parade and performed during the program on Sunday. It was
a very successful weekend and we sold over 120 barrels of beer
over the course of the three days. We want to thank all of the
members who helped us out over that weekend; we could not
have done it without you!
Following the German Day Weekend, the youth group had plenty
to do helping out at the Oktoberfest. Whether it was making
popcorn and selling pretzels or working the outside bar
and selling shots, the Jugend members could be found all over
the fests. We enjoy working at the fest knowing that the money
we make over those weekends goes to allowing us to continue
to keep our heritage alive.
After the third weekend of Oktoberfest, we had Kirchweih, which is our favorite event of the year. Nicki Anetsberger and Nick Balcerak were the winners of the Strauß and we all had a great time celebrating
with them.
On October 23rd some of the Jugendgruppe members
drove up
to Detroit for their Weinlesefest. Erik
and Peter Lisaus-kas.
Alex Anetsberger, Kat
Rally, Erika Neumayer. Jamie Mazur,
Katrina Mueller, and Jenny Werstein
all enjoyed spending
the weekend with their friends from the Detroit Carpathia
Club. We joined Stephen
Mueller that weekend, who often attends Carpathia Club
events and has grown very close to the Jugend from Detroit
since he is finishing up school in Michigan, not far from the
club house. It is so great to know that
if you are in another city, their club will welcome you with open arms, as we have with Jugend from St. Louis and Los Angeles.
Although we had an enjoyable weekend in Detroit and other
members enjoyed their weekend to themselves, we all had one thing
on our minds, the great loss of our dear friend from the Danube
Swabian Cultural Society of Southeastern Wisconsin, Katie
Buchert. She began her struggle with breast cancer four years
ago and it had been an intense roller coaster for her and her
family. Whenever she seemed to be getting better and things
started to look up, she was struck down again. Her
strength was evident right up until the end when doctors
feared she wouldn't make it a few hours when in reality she
hung on for days. She lost her battle with cancer on October 22,
2010 at the young age of 26. She was and is an inspiration to
all of us and we will miss her dearly. She was truly a beautiful
person inside and out!
The Jugendgruppe would like to invite everyone to join us for
our annual Champagne Brunch being held at the Chicago clubhouse
on December 5th. We also invite everyone to the SPINGO
night
fundraiser that will also be held at the clubhouse
on February 25th. Please note that this event is
going to be
later in the month than it has been in previous years. We
thank everyone who has supported the youth group and we always
appreciate your support and look forward continuing to
keep the Donauschwaben traditions alive.

GERMAN
DAY on LINCOLN AVE
This year's annual German Day Parade
started out raining and cloudy and
we wondered if it would rain on our
parade. But by the time the parade
started, the rain had stopped and
it was a bit overcast, perfect parade walking weather. Our
club had young and
old together celebrating
the annual German Day Parade. We
had a lot of Kindergruppe kids on the
float, quite a few Jugend carrying
the German flag like we do every year
and a large turnout of our members carrying flowers and
walking in front of the float. One Kindegruppe member, Megan Gabler, was
asked to ride on the
Kernei float, where she
wore a Maria Mädel outfit, which made
her Kernei grandparents Joe
& Katharina Schneider very
proud. After the
parade the sun came out and
it brought out a large crowd on Lincoln
Ave which was great. There were
a lot of people there enjoying the music, food and especially
the beer from our Jugendgruppe's beer tent.
Sunday brought many of us back
to Lincoln Avenue again for the
German Day Program, which included
our Kindergruppe dancing. This
year we also did a "Freundshaft" dance
with the Donauschwaben Kindergruppe.
The crowd really seemed
to enjoy that.
KIRCHWEIH
By
Anne Lengfelder
The weather certainly cooperated on the
night of Kirchweih. The temperature was
very mild and it felt like much earlier in
the year. The hall looked wonderful thanks
to the efforts of Erika Scheffrahn.
The children were excited to participate in
the Kirchweihmarsch as always. There were a lot of little ones
this year and they all
performed wonderfully. It's nice to see that
our traditions will be carried down to
the next generation. Former long time Kindergruppe
member, Erika Katzenmayer,
picked
Tim O'Reilly's name
out of
the hat so he won the Strauß this year and Kirsten Lengfelder was
his partner. They
enjoyed their celebration dance
together and were joined by all the other Kindergruppe
members. Most of the
children sat on the stage then and watched
the bidding for the Strauß. They can't
wait for the day when they can be in
the Jugendgruppe and participate. Thank
you to everyone for generously donating
your money. Thank you also to the Kindergruppe parents
for putting together all
the Rosemary Strauss pin-ons
that we wore that night. It takes a lot
of effort to make enough for everyone involved.
SCHLACHTFEST
By
Christine Slabinger and Monica Gabler
This year we had a wrapping party to make all our Schlachtfest
baskets look as wonderful as they did. Thanks to
everyone who came and helped wrap baskets even those that
were not theirs. Thanks
to Erika Scheffrahn for
helping make
the wrapping go so smoothly. For our first time group effort
this turned out to be a great success.
Our annual Schlachtfest was on Sunday, November 7th
2010. This
signifies the last big performance for the Kindergruppe.
We look forward to this event but it tells us that the
holidays are right around the corner. The kids did several
dances; some with just the younger kids; some with just
the older kids and some all together. It is nice to see that
we have a large strong group of kids interested in their heritage.
Everyone in attendance really enjoyed their performance
but, as always, it is the Kindergruppe baskets that are
the biggest draw. Everyone, especially the Kindergruppe kids,
wait with full of anticipation to see if their names will be
called out for the basket they wish to win.

The Jugendgruppe began the fall season with Carpathia’s
Oktoberfest. During Saturday’s evening performance, we
were proud to announce the new royalty – Vicki Schwager
and Robert Thomas. Congratulations! Hope you have lots of
fun and a memorable year.
We tried something new at the Oktoberfest – several girls
baked Lebkuchen Herzen (gingerbread hearts) and then
decorated them at the hall. I was there for the decorating
and I can tell you they had a lot of fun. They compared
recipes and decorating ideas. We had hearts with the
familiar “ich liebe dich”, phrase from our dances, such
as “mag I dich” and” bussi, bussi”, and some more
artistic designs. All cookies were sold that weekend. Thanks
to everyone who helped with this! We will do this again
sometime.
The last weekend in September we danced at the annual
Rochester Mills Brewery Oktoberfest, and then on Sunday, we
performed at the St. Josephs Church Oktoberfest. I think
everyone from our group who attended – dancers and parents
– enjoyed St. Josephs. The church bells rang shortly
before they danced. An appreciative crowd watched as the
Jugendgruppe danced outside the tent in the parking lot in
front of the church. From my vantage point I could see the
group dancing with the church in the background – what a
view.
When the last issue went into print we were just about to go
to the Landestreffen in Philadelphia. It was a good weekend
and was as much fun as anticipated. The Hampton Inn outdoor
pool was the gathering spot. Everyone was glad to see each
other again, it truly is a great opportunity to see old
friends and make new ones – for kids and adults! The
performances were good! There was quite a crowd watching us
and our Jugend managed to entertain the people despite some
technical difficulties with the PA system at the start.
Once the system was up and running again they put on
a great show. They received lots of compliments.
Our Jugend have developed close ties with members from the
Milwaukee, Cleveland, and Chicago groups. We are honored
that these members are willing to make the trip to Carpathia
for our events, as some of our members are no strangers to
their events. Since then we have had people come to
Oktoberfest; a group from the American Aid Society of
Chicago performed at Weinlesefest, and the Milwaukee
Donauschwaben performed, with guest dancers from both
Carpathia and Cleveland, at Kirchweih. We look forward to
many more fun filled occasions.
We wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
May this season bring you much joy with family and friends
and health and happiness in 2011.
Be sure to mark the date of Feb 12th for the Jugend Königsball.
We would love to see you all there.

KULTURGRUPPE
The Carpathia Kulturgruppe once again had the privilege of
hosting Weinlesefest this year and what fun we had. The
group came together to set up the trellis for the grapes,
the jail for those that were caught stealing said grapes,
and even sold some pretzels and raffle tickets too. The
evening started out with only a few sheriffs in the crowd
but by the end of the evening we had a whole posse of young
deputies helping keep the grapes safe from thievery.
The group would like to thank all those that donated their
time, efforts, and grape leaves to ensure the evening was a
success. We look forward to seeing everyone next year.
The Kulturgruppe would also like to thank all the club
members (and non-members) that helped us at our fish fries
this past year.
The Carpathia Kulturgruppe will be taking a break from
practices and performances for the month of December and
will resume again in the new year. With that being said, we
are always accepting new members (twenty-one and older
please, with exceptions) into the group and our practices
are held every Sunday from 6 to 8 pm in the Practice Room or
GACC Room (Subject to Change).

SCHUHPLATTLER
The Carpathia Schuhplattler
Group has been very busy this Oktoberfest Season performing
in Lansing, Kalamazoo, Rochester, and here at Carpathia. We
even had to turn down a few performances due to same-date
conflicts. We are looking forward to a break from
performances so we can concentrate on learning some new
dances and maybe reviving some old favorites.
I would like to thank every
member of the Carpathia Schuhplattler group for their time,
efforts, and their knack for being early for performances
and also a very big thank you from the entire group to all
the young ladies that have helped us during our performances
this past year. Lastly I would like to personally thank Paul
Schwalbe for his never-ending-pursuit of new dances (and
music) for the group to learn, his dedication to the style
and perfection of the dances, and for ALWAYS picking up the
ball whenever I have dropped it.
Our practices are on Sundays
from 4 to 5 pm in the Practice Room (Subject to Change). We
are always accepting new members (fourteen and older please,
with exceptions) or those just curious as to what we are
about.

Guests walking through the doors of the Donauschwaben hall
were met with crisp autumn décor in colors of orange, brown
and gold, along with wooden and paper turkeys which set the
tone for the annual Jugendgruppe Fall Champagne Brunch held
on Sunday, November 15 . Members of the Jugendgruppe and
their parents arrived at 8 in the morning and began cooking
all of the delicious breakfast items, such as pancakes,
French toast, scrambled eggs, sausage bacon, and cheese and
cherry blintzes. Savory side dishes, salads, and fabulous
desserts were also provided by the Jugendgruppe parents. Our
guests were thrilled to have so many wonderful food choices!
Rose Hauer thanked all the guests for attending and for
their continued support of the Jugendgruppe. A special thank
you to Hilda Lorenz for doing an outstanding job with the
raffle. Assisting her with the raffle was our new Miss
Donauschwaben Gabi Fuentes. Raffle winners left the Brunch
with beautiful baskets. Three guests also left with
Thanksgiving turkeys. We would like to thank everyone that

The Middle Dance Group has enjoyed a full fall schedule!
We’ve performed at Kirchweih, our Oktoberfest at Donau
Park, St. Charles Oktoberfest, German American Day,
Strassenfest, and they will wrap up their season at the St.
Margaret Mary Church Oktoberfest. One of the highlights of
the season was performing at the German American Day
celebration on Oct. 2. We are pleased to be invited to this
every year. We are challenged to learn a dance to live music
for next year. At the end of the evening, 11 dancers and 2
youth group dancers along with myself and my husband, John
stayed the night (sleepover) at the hall. We played games
till midnight and I couldn’t believe how much fun we all
had.
Thank you to Moni, all the parents, grandparents and the
great support I receive from members of the society.
We will start up practices
again in January. We are always looking for new dancers age

Oktoberfest ist wünderbar… and that it was! Both our
Kindergruppe and Jugendgruppe dancers did an amazing job at
representing the Kitchener Schwaben Club youth. Our
Kindergruppe had six performances and our Jugendgruppe had
eight, not to mention participating in the Thanksgiving Day
Parade! This year a few children also had an opportunity to
participate on the Remembrance Day Societies new “Toy”
float. Later to find out it won the Wünderbar Award!
Congratulations to Emma, Adam, Jake and Deanna. A special
thank you to Helene Schramek for including our children!
A HUGE thank you to instructors, parents, guardians,
relatives, friends and volunteers in making this year’s
Oktoberfest another success. Everyone’s hard work and
dedication certainly showed and paid off. We would also like
to thank the Schwaben Club as well as the other festhalls
that supported our dance groups: Hubertushaus, Concordia
Club, Oktoberfest Inc., Transylvania Club, and Altes
Muenchen Haus.
This year our Jugendgruppe participated in the “So you

They danced incredible and were quite the competition
especially to our own Schwaben Dancers! Congratulations
Jugendgruppe on your first competition and to the winners,
our fellow dancers at the Transylvania Club!
We would like to welcome the Herold Family and their
