Totengedenkfeier 2009

Trenton Donauschwaben

Forwarded From Trenton Donauschwaben

The club has been doing this event every single year since the late Peter Kiss began things in 1979. Back then we had a huge contingent of the oldest generation make up the bulk of the attendees. Alas that group of Donauschwaben has largely passed on and it’s now in the hands of the children, grandchildren, great grandchildren of those folks to carry the tradition forward. So how is it going? Well, this past November 2nd we had one our biggest groups in years on hand to commemorate the tragedy that befell the Donauschwaben between 1944 and 1949. What a wonderful honor!

A word about the event: We gather at Our Lady of Lourdes cemetery near the Hamilton – Trenton border at a large memorial made possible through donations by local Donauschwaben. The monuments contain the names of family and friends who lost their lives in the aftermath of WWII. They number just a small fraction of the 10’s of thousands who fell victim to Tito and his communist henchmen. Our job is commemorate what can only be described as a genocide through prayer, song and ritual. It is indeed a most satisfying and worthwhile experience.

The weather was excellent for the Sunday afternoon event. We had five different folks take part in the service, making it all the more meaningful . Thanks to everyone who attended, you made this year’s Totengedenkfeier a big success. Thanks as well to the club for hosting a very well attended reception after the event. We look forward to seeing you there next year!

German Language Program

Up and Running!!!

Forwarded From Trenton Donauschwaben

Andy Franz will resume holding regular classes for adult club members starting in March 2009 after his return from the Bahamas. The group will meet Wednesday evenings starting at 7:30. We hope anyone interested in German language and culture will consider attending.

Likewise, Eva Martini will restart the children’s language program on Friday, January 9th at 6:30. The one hour long session features games, arts and crafts and a variety of other activities intended to teach our youngsters about the language and culture of our ancestors. All children, kindergarten age and older, are cordially invited to attend.

Please note that our language program is free to all club members. Both Andy and Eva have graciously donated their time to make this possible. We thank them most sincerely and hope you will take full advantage of the wonderful educational opportunity our club is thus able to offer.

AKRON'S RADIO PROGRAM

Forwarded From Akron Donauschwaben, German Family Society

Präsident: Sepp Geiser

Since 1981, the German Family Society has been able to offer their members and the German population in northeast Ohio a weekly German Radio program called “Die Stimme des Donauparks” (The voice of the Donaupark).  It is on the air every Sunday afternoon, 91.3 FM, from 2 till 4 o’clock, with five alternating announcers, Veronika Fleischer, Gerhard Kunze, Ernie Schaefer, Gertraud Seigfrid and Lisa Germeister.

Each announcer is popular with a certain category of listeners and selects their own style of music, which presents the audience with a wide variety of old and modern melodies. Our announcers have volunteered their time for this service for many years and use their own music libraries plus the club library to bring you beautiful German music.  The older generation especially looks forward to the Sunday afternoon relaxing two hours to enjoythe beautiful melodies from back home.  The German hours also include news of future club functions and other German organizational events, regular updates of soccer games from Europe and interesting information involving the past and present German culture that is still alive in the US.

Our program started out on the University of Akron radio station.  After many years, the International programs were eliminated by the university and we switched to the Akron Public Schools radio station, WAPS 91.3, The Summit, 65 Steiner Ave.,Akron, Oh 44301.  (91.3 FM)  Our program can now be heard over the internet at (web address:www.913thesummit.com)  every Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. eastern standard or eastern daylight savings time.

Since the German program originated, the German Family Society has been the main contributor to this weekly feature.  This plus the sponsorship by local business and the financial contributions from faithful listeners enables us to keep this popular feature on the air.

Donau Dancers

Octoberfest!

Forwarded From Kitchener Donauschwaben

Joel Wideman

Oktoberfest has come and gone for another year!

This year was especially significant, since it was the 40th Anniversary of K-W’s version of the great German celebration known as “Oktoberfest”. As in past years, it was a busy time for all the participating dance groups from all the German Clubs. The Donau Dancers were no exception. Including our Club, we did upwards of fifteen performances through the week, and also participated in the Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Once again, Mother Nature was on our side, providing exceptional weather conditions! Despite a few blisters on some feet, (and hoarse voices) ..it went off without a hitch!

Prosit!

Schwaben Dancers

A Good Year!

Forwarded From Kitchener Donauschwaben

Andrea Adam

The Schwaben Dancers have been keeping busy these last few months between weddings, practices, car washes and performances. This past summer we were happy to celebrate 2 weddings from our dance group - Jennifer (Harvey) and Michael Offak, and Katelyn (Tschirhart) and Dave Borch. Congrats you guys! Throughout the summer we held monthly car washes to fund- raise money for our group. Thanks to everyone who came out and let us wash your vehicles!! For Labour Day weekend we proudly participated at Tag der Donauschwaben in Cleveland, Ohio with the Donau Dancers. We performed on both the Saturday and Sunday, and were able to cheer on our friends from Toronto in the Dr. Awender competition. It was wonderful to see old friends and meet new ones. In September we celebrated Kirchweih with our club members. This was a lovely evening organized by the Frauengruppe. The highlights of the evening included the dance performances (especially the Kindergruppe performance), the Rosemary Bush auction, the food, the entertainment and the raffle prizes.

This year, KW Oktoberfest celebrated its 40th Anniversary. On the weekend preceding Oktoberfest, Saturday, October 4th, KW Oktoberfest Inc. hosted the Oktoberfest Expo at the Concordia Tent. The first portion of the eve- ning consisted of German performances from all of the local clubs, as well as polka music, German food and of course beer. The second part of the night was a concert, starring Burton Cummings and Tom Cochrane. The Schwaben Dancers and the Donau Dancers proudly represented the Schwaben Club. On the first weekend of Oktoberfest, we were thrilled to welcome our visitors from Iowa. Rosemary (Harvey) Rehberg, along with the help of Monica Anstett, the dance groups and the club, organized her folk dance group from the University of Iowa to come up and partake in our German festival. They performed Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Schwaben Club, and also joined the Schwaben Dancers during their performance of Rheinlander. We had a blast with this fun, energetic group and look forward to staying in touch

Our numerous Oktoberfest performances through- out KW kept our dance group busy every day of the festival. Our dancers proudly marched in the parade along with the Kindergruppe, Jugundgruppe, Donau Dancers, parents and many other club members. We had a great turn out this year!! Amongst our many performances during Oktoberfest, our dance group also participated in the first annual “So You Think You Can Folk Dance” competition on Tuesday, October 14th. This competition consisted of performances by the local German folk dance groups - and their performances were judged by the guest dance group from Grainbach. Although the Schwaben Dancers performed spectacularly, the Transylvania Dance group walked away with the title and trophy. All of the participants did a great job - and we look forward to next year’s competition.

As a fundraiser, the Schwaben Dancers created t-shirts to wear and sell - “Polka Hero” - sponsored by local companies & businesses. T-shirts are still available for $20 each (in select sizes) - you can contact me at: andrea_kja@hotmail.com if you’re interested.

The Schwaben Dancers are looking forward to the holidays and 2009!
